What To Look For When Shopping Around For Horse Trailers

When you are ready to start shopping around for used or new horse trailers, you are going to want to know exactly what it is that you need to look for. After all, horse trailers are not often cheap so you want to ensure that you are getting the best one for your money. Here are some of the things that you will want to consider when shopping for a horse trailer.

Proper Ventilation

For the safety of your horses, you will want to make sure that the horse trailer that you purchase is one that has plenty of ventilation. Look for windows along both sides of the trailer that can slide open. There should be some ventilation along the top of the trailer as well, as that will help any build up of hot air escape the trailer and keep your horses cooler. After all, heat rises.

Hitch Strength

This might not be as much of an issue if you are buying a brand new horse trailer. However, if you are shopping for used horse trailers, you will want to pay special attention to the hitch. It needs to be in great shape and free from any visible signs of damage. You will also want to inspect the entire hitch, including the underside of it, in order to spot any possible rust. If there is rust on the hitch, even if it is just a little bit, you may want to keep searching for another horse trailer, that is of course unless you want to repair that one.

Floorboards And Ramp Security

You will want to open up the back of the horse trailer, extend the ramp, and remove the floor mats covering the floor of the trailer. This will give you a chance to get to see the true condition of the ramp and floor. Remember, horses are incredibly heavy so you need a very strong horse trailer to safely contain them. Bounce up and down on the trailer floor in order to check for areas of weakness. If you are looking at a used horse trailer and you are able to get it for an incredibly low price, you might be able to repair the floor before placing your horses in it.
