Have you noticed that your dog is acting a bit stranger than normal? Maybe he is acting a bit anxious or maybe even depressed. Believe it or not, dogs can become stressed, just like humans. And, just like humans, stress can negatively affect a dog's health and well-being. Therefore, it is important that you are aware of the red flags of anxiety and stress in your dog so you know when to seek professional help immediately.
Sign #1: Digestive Issues
Gastrointestinal issues, including constipation and diarrhea, are often associated with a food-related illness or disease; however, they can also be caused by anxiety and stress. If these digestive issues become incredibly severe, such as if they last more than 24 hours, it is important that you reach out to your veterinarian for assistance.
Sign #2: Isolation
Every once in a while, your dog may need some private time – just like humans do. However, dogs should never constantly isolate themselves from people and other animals. If they do, this may be a sign of sickness or anxiety. You can take your dog to the veterinarian, who will be able to help you pinpoint the cause of the behavior.
Sign #3: Increased Sleeping
Your dog probably has a certain amount of time that he sleeps during the day, and you have become aware of his sleeping patterns. If you have noticed that your dog has been sleeping more or less than usual, it is important to reach out to your veterinarian. Tiredness is usually the first red flag that your dog is injured, sick, or even traumatized in some way. Of course, it can also be a symptom of various health conditions, including dehydration, diabetes, liver and heart problems, tumors, etc.
Sign #4: Decrease in Appetite
If you notice that your dog is not eating as much as usual or not eating at all, it may be an underlying health issue like anorexia or it could be stress. Either way, it is crucial that you talk to your veterinarian immediately. Your dog needs to eat on a regular basis and consume a certain number of calories a day or it could lead to a significant amount of weight loss that is harmful for your pet.
If you have noticed any sudden changes in your dog's behavior recently, you need to schedule a visit with your local veterinarian clinic, like Evergreen Veterinary Clinic. Your veterinarian will perform a full exam so that underlying health issues can be ruled out, and then he or she may talk to you about how to reduce your pet's stress levels.
A few months back, I realized that our kids were really lonely. We knew that we wouldn't be able to have any other children, so we started focusing on what we could do to make a difference. We started exploring the possibility of adopting an animal, and before we knew it, we were bringing home a pet that we knew our kids would love. They were incredibly receptive to the idea of having the little puppy, and after a few days together, I knew that he would become a treasured member of our family.
